On Thursday, the California Collegiate Athletic Association released its final list of All-Academic honorees for the 2022-23 school year. A total of 928 student-athletes across the conference met the threshold of a 3.4 grade point average or higher for the year, including 59 Lumberjacks across 10 sports.

The Humboldt Women’s soccer and softball teams had the highest number of All-Academic performers with 10 each. Men’s soccer and women’s volleyball were close behind with eight qualifiers each. Men’s track and field had seven while their female counterparts had four. Men’s and women’s cross country had three each (those athletes also participate in track). Women’s basketball had four qualifiers and men’s basketball had two. Although an initial statement from Cal Poly Humboldt and the CCAA had mentioned 60 honorees, one of the three men’s basketball players mentioned was not on the team this past season.

It was very strong year for All-Academic performers across the conference as the league was just seven students short of breaking the record of 935 honorees set the previous year. Despite the strong academics across the board, Humboldt would still have a bit of work to do to coach up to their league rivals as their 59 honorees ranked ninth out of the 12 schools in terms of the total number of All-Academic performers for each school.

The College of the Redwoods announced on Thursday that it reached an agreement with Bear River Rancheria to temporarily house students at the hotel there in a manner equivalent to the college’s own resident halls. Within the released statement was also a reference to a future baseball field for the Corsairs.

“The signing of this (memorandum of understanding) marks the beginning of an exciting new partnership between the Bear River Tribe and College of the Redwoods, which may expand to include construction of a regulation-size NCAA artificial turf baseball field alongside the softball field on Bear River Rancheria,” the statement read.

The softball team at Redwoods currently practices and plays home games at the Bear River Sports Complex adjacent to the hotel and casino. That field was also used by Cal Poly Humboldt’s softball team for home games throughout the year. The turf field is more resilient to the elemental weather challenges in the region that can affect spring sports.

The possibility of a new baseball field would be a logical next step in the college’s efforts to modernize its athletics facilities. In May, Redwoods announced that the board of trustees had finalized a comprehensive plan for the Community Stadium project. The new facility will be a significant upgrade over the current outdated grass field and surrounding dirt track, featuring a modern turf field for football and soccer in addition to upgrades for track and field. There will also be upgraded bleachers for fans to attend the events.

The Community Stadium project, handled by tBP architecture, is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2024.
